Who created the double thumb technique?

This week’s bass lesson covers something I’ve been asked about quite a lot over the past few months: The Double Thumb Technique. This is a slap bass technique pioneered by Victor Wooten and involves a very different kind of slap bass thumb motion.

Can you slap on any bass?

Slapping should indeed be possible on any bass, popping on the other hand isn’t for just any bass.

Why is it called slap bass?

The invention of slap on electric bass is generally credited to funk bassist Larry Graham. Graham has stated in several interviews that he was trying to emulate the sound of a drum set before his band had found its drummer. Graham himself refers to the technique as “thumpin′ and pluckin′”.

Can you slap on an acoustic bass?

Acoustic Basses have sometimes a bad reputation: a big body, a large neck that make it very uncomfortable for some techniques as slapping and tapping. But, please keep in mind that most of those manufactured acoustic basses are not well settled and are delivered with bad strings quality.

Why can’t I slap the bass?

In my experience slapping sometimes doesn’t work on a bass because the action is too low, or maybe there’s not enough room between the strings and pickups for the string to move enough to get a tone. OK let’s be clear on one point. Slapping doesn’t depend upon the pickups or the electronics.

Why does my bass slap sound bad?

Slapping can sound really bad on old, dead strings. A lot of the slap sound comes from the zing of fresh new strings and when you’re getting started as a beginner bass player, you’re likely to get frustrated that it doesn’t sound like you want it to.
